Pass Travel update - Dec 17 2011 -- Posted by Linda on Saturday, December 24 2011
MEC Pass Travel Committee Update
Captain Pat Palazzolo

The company recently released a letter describing what to expect in 2012 with the transition to the new pass travel policies and procedures. I'm going to summarize and clarify the major points as a result of email feedback.

The changes to the new integrated travel program and policies will occur in two steps:

Step 1: January 1, 2012
Step 2: PSS Day 1, which will be sometime in March of 2012

Step 1: Beginning January 1, 2012 changes will occur in the following areas:

1. Temporary Vacation Passes
2. Companion Passes

Temporary Vacation Passes: UA and CO employees (not retirees) will be able to travel on each others' airlines using a special, separate allotment of 8 "old-type" vacation passes good for approximately the first three months of 2012 up until the date the company converts to one computerized reservations system (The company calls this date "PSS Day 1." It is expected this date will be on some date in March 2012. These temporary vacation passes will no longer be valid after PSS Day 1.

The purpose of this special allotment of vacation passes is simply to allow UA employees and eligibles to ride on any international Continental flight and not pay any service charges. It will do you no good to use these on a domestic Continental flight in economy because they are already free.

For UA employees, this allotment of eight "old type" temporary vacation passes (good for only one person) can be used for as many connections as required in one direction on any Continental flight. These passes are service charge free. UA pass riders will pay for any departure taxes or fees as we currently do.

UA employees using these temporary eight vacation passes will continue to board CO flights at priority SA4U (following all CO eligibles and companions).

Companion Passes: All UA retirees and employees will be given their normal allotment of 24 companion passes on January 1 and they will be valid only until PSS Day 1 sometime in March. Until PSS Day 1, UA companions can only ride on United flights -- not Continental.

What will not change on January 1: All remaining UA pass benefits and UA boarding priorities will remain unchanged until PSS Day 1 in March 2012.

Step 2: Beginning on PSS Day 1, more changes will occur:

1. "New type" annual allotment of vacation passes will be issued.
2. "Leveling the playing field" for UA and CO vacation pass usage.
3. 2012 Buddy passes will be issued for employees only.
4. Retirees will be able to designate two enrolled friends in addition to their spouse or domestic partner.
5. UA and CO pass travelers will be intermingled and use a temporary boarding order within each boarding priority on the combined airline pending software enhancements.
6. Employees and retirees with 25 or more years of service will have all service charges waived in all classes of service on all passes.

Vacation Passes: UA and CO retirees and employees will receive their 2012 annual allotment of eight one-way "new type" vacation passes. (Any unused "old type" temporary vacation passes you received on January 1 will no longer be valid after PSS Day 1).

Each "new type" Vacation Pass can be used by all eligibles traveling at the same time for as many connections as required to get to your destination. These vacation passes are valid until the end of 2016.

All vacation passes -- new and old types -- are service charge free for all classes of service.

Leveling the playing field for UA and CO employees: Many United employees have expressed concern about CO employees saving their previously unused vacation passes while UA employees were not given that opportunity. The concern has been that this would give CO employees an unfair advantage over UA employees who have not been able to acquire them.

ALPA and the other unions met with company management to discuss a way to "level the playing field." During our discussions, the company reminded us that all unused CO vacation passes are of the "old type," meaning that they are good for only one person per pass.

As a result of our discussions, the company says it will issue a retroactive allotment of eight "old type" 2011 Vacation Passes to all UA employees on January 1, 2012. (CO retirees did not get vacation passes prior to the merger, so our UA retirees will not receive any retroactive vacation passes).

These retroactive 2011 Vacation Passes are good for one person only and are valid until the end of 2015. We have asked the company to extend that expiration date for a total of five years like the Continental employees had, instead of four years. As of this writing we have not heard back from the company and the date remains the end of 2015. These retroactive "old type" 2011 Vacation Passes are in addition to our normal 2012 allotment of eight "new-type" vacation passes.

While I would have preferred a larger allotment to UA employees in order to level the playing field, please consider this: Those CO employees who have accumulated a large number of vacation passes did so because they rarely traveled in the past. And in my view these same people are less likely to travel in the future. Likewise, those CO employees who traveled the most are in my view, likely to have few vacation passes remaining.

While I don't think this makes the playing field level, I feel it is certainly welcome and does make it much less steep.

"Buddy Passes" will replace the term companion passes after PSS Day 1. On PSS Day 1, employees will receive their 2012 allotment of 24 "Buddy Passes" for the combined carrier. Retirees will no longer be able to use their companion passes after PSS Day 1. But retirees will be able to designate two enrolled friends on an annual basis in addition to a spouse or domestic partner. Retirees and employees can begin to list their enrolled friends and other eligible pass riders on the company's web site under "All about me" beginning on January 1.

Credit for time on furlough: There have been persistent questions about whether or not the new management or the new Pass Policies will continue to recognize furlough time in years of service for pass travel purposes. Senior HR management has assured us repeatedly that the answer is "Yes."

25 or more years of service: Beginning on PSS Day 1, employees and retirees with 25 or more years of service will have all service charges waived in all classes of service on all passes.

Temporary Boarding order: There has been a lot of concern from a recent announcement by the company that under the new pass travel program, pass riders will be boarded within each boarding priority by year of hire, followed by time of check in for all those hired the same year.

The company has assured us that this is a temporary procedure.

Sometime in March, the company is converting the passenger reservation system at United from United's Apollo to the Continental system called "Shares." Shares only knows how to board pass riders by years -- not months and days -- of service. This has been the standard procedure at Continental.

The company has told us that the plan is to upgrade Shares to be able to board all pass riders by years, months and days of service within each boarding priority (A, B, C, etc.). They have not yet provided an estimate when this will be completed, but I don't see the company dragging its feet on this. As one manager said to me, "We know this is important to the employees."

So in the mean time, until the company's software is upgraded, pass riders on a particular flight who were hired in the same calendar year will be listed on the standby list in order of time of check in beginning sometime in March of 2012.

questions regarding travel -- Posted by Linda on Tuesday, December 13 2011
No one can answer all of your questions about all the “Stuff” that is going down, But, the best bet is to ask the question of the source. Here is the place that may start to give us the details that we are looking for.

From a UA Retiree;

Advise retirees to send emails addressing the many questions we all have, confusing issues, etc. to etc@coair.com I just did and will have to pray that they answer it in full as they seem to be incomplete or holding back info from us. This is so hurtful as it almost seems deliberate or indifference to us.

EEOC UPDATE -- Posted by Linda on Tuesday, October 18 2011
Dear All:
The EEOC case is still moving forward. Currently, we are still in the first three of Seven steps with the charge as questionnaires are being sent to the EEOC at various times from across the country. Here is the most direct way. The EEOC CHARGE PROCESSING is as follows.

1. Intake interview conducted
2.Timely charge filed
3. Investigation, gather and review evidence.
4. Decision on merit of Charge.
5. Violation
6.Concilliation
7. EEOC Litigates

Please keep in mind attempts are being made trying to resolve the case at all times. The EEOC will mediate at any and all steps in order to settle the case. Finally, if we have met and satisfied the rquirements each of the first six steps, the EEOC Litigates on the seventh step.
We know the response has been good with the questionnaires sent to the EEOC, but we can, and should do better. I still believe, and the hope is strong, we must continue to fight, even when there are those amongst us who will not help.

1933 UAL FIRST AIR SABATOGE CRASH -- Posted by Linda on Monday, October 10 2011
Thanks to EK WILLIAMS for the historical information

United Airlines Chesterton Crash United Air Lines, NC13304
Restored Boeing 247 in United Air Lines livery, similar to the crashed aircraft
summary
Date October 10, 1933
Type Sabotage via probable nitroglycerin bomb
Site Chesterton, Indiana
Passengers 4
Crew 3
Injuries 0
Fatalities 7
Survivors 0
Aircraft type Boeing 247D
Operator United Air Lines
Tail number NC13304
Flight origin Newark, New Jersey
1st stopover Cleveland, Ohio
Last stopover Chicago, Illinois
Destination Oakland, California
On October 10, 1933, a Boeing 247 propliner operated by United Air Lines and registered as NC13304, crashed near Chesterton, Indiana. The transcontinental flight, carrying three crew and four passengers, had originated in Newark, New Jersey, with its final destination in Oakland, California. It had already landed in Cleveland and was headed to its next stop in Chicago, but exploded en route. All aboard died in the crash, which was proven to have been deliberately caused by an on-board explosive device.

Eyewitnesses on the ground reported hearing an explosion shortly after 9 p.m., and told of seeing the plane in flames at an altitude of about 1,000 feet. A second explosion followed after the plane crashed. The crash scene was adjacent to a gravel road about five miles outside of Chesterton, centered in a wooded area on the Jackson Township farm of James Smiley.[1]

Investigators who combed through the debris were confronted with unusual evidence: The toilet and baggage compartment had been smashed into fragments. Shards of metal riddled the inside of the toilet door while the other side was free of the metal fragments. The tail section had been severed just aft of the toilet and was found mostly intact almost a mile away from the main wreckage.[2]

Melvin Purvis, head of the Chicago office of the United States Bureau of Investigation described the damage: "Our investigation convinced me that the tragedy resulted from an explosion somewhere in the region of the baggage compartment in the rear of the plane. Everything in front of the compartment was blown forward, everything behind blown backward, and things at the side outward." He also noted: "The gasoline tanks, instead of being blown out, were crushed in, showing there was no explosion in them."[3]

An investigator from the Porter County coroner's office, Dr. Carl Davis,[4] and experts from the Crime Detection Laboratory at Northwestern University[2][5] examined evidence from the crash, and concluded that the crash had been due to a bomb, with nitroglycerin as the probable explosive agent. One of the passengers was seen carrying a brown package onto the plane in Newark, but investigators who found the package amidst the wreckage ruled it out as being the cause of the explosion.[2] A rifle was found in the wreckage but it was determined to have been carried aboard as baggage for a passenger who was en route to attend a shoot at Chicago's North Shore Gun Club.[2][4]

Despite the efforts of the investigators, no suspect has ever been identified or charged in this incident, and it remains unsolved.

This is thought to be the first proven act of air sabotage in the history of commercial aviation.[6] One of the air crew killed was the flight attendant, Alice Scribner, 26, of Chicago. Scribner, a trained nurse, was in her first month on the job,[7] She was the first United flight attendant to be killed in a plane crash.[8]

EEOC -- Posted by Linda on Wednesday, September 28 2011
Hi Friends,
(WE ARE TRYING TO GET A CLARIFICATION ON THE FINAL DATE)
1. There are only FIVE DAYS LEFT to fill out and mail the EEOC form (for age discrimination) against United Airlines. Retirees and Actives over 40 may complete it (not dependents). We need EEOC to know that losing travel benefits in retirement matters to all of us!

Starting in 2012, Companion Passes will no longer be a benefit for retirees, yet they will be given to actives. Retirees will go to the back of the boarding priority line, after all actives, their dependents, their companions, etc. (even those with 25+ years who were promised BP6 priority). Our CEO, Jeff Smisek, has even said that CO employees will be able to come into the merger with old vacation passes (no expiration date), while UA's incentive passes expire this year. He says that CO employees earned their passes, yet at the same time he's saying that retirees have not earned what was promised to them on their retirement day: the right to board by seniority.

If you need help filling out the form, email me. You can actually type your information directly onto the form from your computer. Be sure to print it and keep a copy for your records. At the top, write, "I intend for my complaint to be combined with Charge Number: 541-2011-01769." Mail to: Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Atten: Myrna DeQuiroga, Intake Supervisor, 303 East 17th Street, Ste. 410, Denver, CO 80203

2. Sign up for periodic updates at the new website, "The United Retired." You don't have to be retired! Remember, it's about YOUR future.
http://www.theunitedretired.com/The_United_Retired/Newsletter.html

3. Spread the word and forward this information to your friends. Print out EEOC forms and distribute to those who are not on a computer. Every little bit helps.

Thanks,
Barb

EEOC - CLASS ACTION = FROM RUAEA PRES. -- Posted by Linda on Wednesday, August 31 2011

RUAEA NEWS

From the President

- posted 8/31/2011

Dear RUAEA Members,

A age discrimination complaint has been sent to the EEOC regarding the new pass policy to take effect in 2012. There has been lots of email circulating in cyberspace about this complaint. I have tried to validate with the EEOC without much success. The National 800 number referred me to the Denver office where I have left a message as to who we are and could they provide any additional information. No call back as of now. When this issue first came up we had some legal advise which basically said that there probably would not be sufficient grounds for a case...but with the current politics of the day who knows. Anyway attached is the guide on how to submit for anyone who wants to join in. Below are the instructions from the EEOC website. With the legal advice we have we are not recommending a pro or con choice in this matter…it is up to the individual on what action they would like to take.

The latest information can be found at the following website www.theunitedretired.com.

Ron Bertacini
RUAEA President

- Download EEOC Uniform Intake Questionnaire

- Download Questionnaire Instructions

INSTRUCTIONS FROM EEOC:

You can file a charge by sending us a letter that includes the following information:

Your name, address, and telephone number
The name, address and telephone number of the employer (or employment agency or union) you want to file your charge against
The number of employees employed there (if known)
A short description of the events you believe were discriminatory (for example, you were fired, demoted, harassed)
When the events took place
Why you believe you were discriminated against (for example, because of your race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information)
Your signature

Don't forget to sign your letter. If you don’t sign it, we cannot investigate it.
Your letter will be reviewed and if more information is needed, we will contact you to gather that information or you may be sent a follow up questionnaire. At a later date, we will contact you and may put all of the information you sent us on an official EEOC charge form and ask you to sign it.

Our point: a major corp is attempting to take away retirement benefits which have been in place for decades. Retirement flight benefits were part of our original hiring packages, were the reward for financial sacrifice in dire times, and were implemented at retirement. The new retiree plan decimates these existing benefits while younger employees receive improvements to their plans.

If you have any questions, please post on our page on Facebook.

For your information - United will be able to obtain a list of people who have filed; however, according to federal law, they can take no punitive action against the class members .

IAM GRIEVANCE ON THE PASS POLICTY BP6 & SEN DATE -- Posted by Linda on Wednesday, June 22 2011
Robyn Eulo 10:10am Jun 22

GRIEVANCE UPDATE - The grievance in regard to the violation of Article I and Past Practice in regard to the "new travel policy" was heard on Wed. this week. The union did not ask to for any benefit to be taken away from any CO employee, what we asked for is that the company reinstate the 6B boarding priority for the retirees and that...... all employees start out on a equal playing field on Jan. 1, 2012, we also included that the CO employees should also receive mileage plus points. I will let you know what the outcome is, not counting on the grievance being sustained, but hoping it will be taken further by the union.

UA, CO ALIGN TO WAIVE FEES FOR DOMESTIC Y PASS TVL -- Posted by Linda on Thursday, June 9 2011
UA, CO align to waive fees for domestic economy pass travel

All subsidiary CO and Continental Micronesia co-workers, retirees, early outs and eligible pass riders can now pass travel fee-waived in economy class, regardless of their years of active company service, on all U.S. CO and UA domestic flights, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Fee-waived economy travel also applies to flights within the Micronesian islands, as well as between Guam and the Micronesian islands.

The new fee-waived economy travel privileges remove the ZED service charges from the interim program that UA co-workers pay to fly on CO flights, as well as the charges CO co-workers pay for travel on UA flights in all domestic markets.

UA and CO co-workers will continue to pay applicable service charges for traveling in premium classes on their respective carriers. Co-workers of each subsidiary will continue to receive a 33 percent discount on ZED fares for travel in premium classes on flights operated by the other subsidiary.

We urge pass riders who have pending domestic, economy reservations to cancel the bookings online and re-list to take advantage of fee-waived travel.

BA now has ZED Electronic Tktg 12May -- Posted by Linda on Wednesday, May 11 2011
BA to offer electronic ZED ticketing

Effective May 12, British Airways (BA) will no longer accept paper tickets for employee/interline pass travel. All Zonal Employee Discount (ZED) travel on BA after May 11 will require an e-ticket. To keep our current ZED agreements in place, BA has developed a website to assist subsidiary UA and CO co-workers with all future e-ticketing needs.

BA will charge co-workers using the site a non-refundable service fee of GBP 2.50 per segment, and another GBP 1.00 per segment for e-ticket refunds. Co-workers must make all ticketing requests, changes, refunds and listings through this site.

Subsidiary UA and CO co-workers will continue to follow their original ZED agreement terms with BA.

For more information and instructions on how to use the BA interline ticketing site, subsidiary UA co-workers should visit the Travel page on SkyNet. Subsidiary CO co-workers should see ePass News and Announcements on employeeRES. Each subsidiary has separate user access information.

CHANGES AT CHECK-IN KIOSKS FOR NON=REVS -- Posted by Linda on Tuesday, May 10 2011
Changes at check-in kiosks for UA non-revenue fliers

As part of our customer integration work, our self-service kiosks will begin offering check-in for customers traveling on both UAand CO-operated flights. The kiosk screens will feature a new look and feel. Some units with the new screens are being tested in several of our hubs, and co-workers may come across them when checking in for flights.

One of the changes will alter how subsidiary UA non-revenue travelers check in. The button for “Employee/Companion Travel” won’t be on option on the main screen. All non-revenue travelers should touch the “search for your reservation” button on the welcome screen, then enter their confirmation or listing number on the entry screen displayed. Subsidiary UA co-workers can still use file numbers, but that won’t be listed among the entry options, which ask for check-in by credit card, driver’s license, passport and Mileage Plus or OnePass card.

UA employees should prepare their eligibles and companions for the new self-service check-in process:

Step 1 - Touch “search for your reservation” button.

Step 2 - Enter confirmation/listing number or file number.

Step 3 - Follow the on-screen prompts.

Co-workers continue to have the option to check in online and print their own boarding passes or download them to mobile devices.

Co-workers may download a quick reference guide to help with the transition. Visit SkyNet’s Travel News & Bulletins section.

We feel that there is plenty of room for improvement. Over the last sixty years travel programs have evolved to the benefit of both employees and retirees. There is no good reason that this program should be any different. While the company is pleasing their current employees, we would hope it must not forget who got them to this point. The retirement community can and does provide tangible benefits to the future of the new company.

The new Pass Travel Program is advertised to be fair to all. The elimination of the ‘super’ boarding priorities from the previous program was a step toward leveling the playing field for all. The vacation passes are a nice feature of the new Pass Travel Program but beyond them the retiree community is penalized with a lower boarding priority. With only four round-trips annually the level field is quite narrow. Increasing the number of vacation passes to sixteen annually for everyone, employees and retirees, would be a definite improvement, along with restoration of "Date of Hire" for boarding priority for all employees and retirees.

The issue of Buddy Passes versus Enrolled Friends is a curious situation. While providing retirees the ability to have two Enrolled Friends is nice it seems that it would be more beneficial to the company to offer the retirees the option of either Enrolled Friends or Buddy Passes . At least the Buddy Passes provide revenue to the company.

We also have concerns that surviving spouses of both employees and retirees are being left out of the new Pass Travel Program. For years they have been afforded pass travel on United and United Express. We would hope that this policy would continue.
